Submeshing in Blender
From Rigs of Rods Wiki
Hi, this is a tutorial for submeshing in blender. Ive seen many many requests for an up to date tutorial, so here it is. *please excuse my grammar and punctuation, I will try my best* Please report any errors or what not you find here [1]. But be nice!. I worked really hard and long on this.
When you first start blender, you will see this.
Press "A" on your keyboard twice to select all. Then press the "delete" key above your up/down/left/right keys to get to this.
Then click "Erase Selected Object(s)" to delete everything. You now have a clean sheet to start with. Import your truck/car/load/flying saucer with lazerbeams, into blender by clicking on "file/import/RoR Importer" as shown in this pic.
We will submesh just a simple box for now. It will look similar to this when you import your truck/car/load/flying saucer with lazerbeams into blender.
Now, Go into edit mode *Press TAB** and Select 3 edges in a triangle fashion *hold shift and right click* and press "F" on your keyboard to create a triangle. Like in this picture.
Now continue with this until your truck/car/load/flying saucer with lazerbeams is meshed to your liking. Then you will end up with something like this.
Now, you notice there are some dark spots? That is where the triangle faces are backwards. to fix this is simple, click on the "Draw Normals" button in the lower right corner.
and where the little blue stick is pointing inwards, select that triangle's 3 edges and press "W", Then click on "Flip normal" As shown here.
Now, once you have all your normals situated, time to Unwrap the submesh. Select everything by pressing "A" until your whole vehicle is a light purple and press "U" Then click on "unwrap" as shown in this picture.
I wont go into editing your mapping, ill explain that later. but now, you need to get the uv editer up. Right click on the line where the arrows point and click "Split Area"
Then a small line will show up, click somewhere on the 3d view screen *where your vehicle is* and then drag it to your likings. Now click where the small grid thing in the lower left corner of the new screen. and select "UV/Image Editor"
And something similar to this will show up
Now, click "image" in the bottom of the new screen and then new.
then putt the settings in the little box that show up like this.
Now, go back to the 3d view thing where your vehicle is, and press "Ctrl+Alt+B" on your keyboard and this will show up.
Now, it should look something like this.
Don't forget to save this poor image to disk. On the Image window, choose Image -> Save As -> choose PNG format and save the file into your truck folder. Now you can open this image with GIMP (or any other program) and modify your skin.
Now, Time to export! Click on, "File/Export/RoR Exporter" and export back into your vehicle file.
Make sure you have "submesh" at the bottom of your truck file above end or blender wont export the submesh!.
Your done! now test it in game and see if it works!
