    Default Announcement: PPA for Ubuntu-12.04

Hello, this post is announcement and call for testing and start for discussion and proof of concept about proper packaging and releasing RoR for Ubuntu (maybe for other deb-based distributions too).

This post is rewritten at March 8. 2013.

There are packages for Ubuntu 11.10 (Oneiric), 12.04 (Precise), 12.10 (Quantal) and 13.04 (Raring).

For users: You need to decide do you want install a) 0.38-stable -version or b) unstable development version 0.44.

Add https://launchpad.net/~aapo-rantalai...ror-038-stable -repository and install package rigsofrods.
    (or https://launchpad.net/~aapo-rantalai...r-044-unstable)

    (e.g. from commandline)
    Code:
    sudo add-apt-repository ppa:aapo-rantalainen/ror-038-stable
    sudo apt-get update
    sudo apt-get install rigsofrods
With RoR-038 you need also run:
    Code:
    mkdir ~/.rigsofrods
    cp -r /opt/rigsofrods/bin/skeleton/* ~/.rigsofrods
And with RoR-038 before first start you need configure the game. Use commandline or graphical:
    Commandline:
    Code:
       /opt/rigsofrods/bin/rorconfig
      RoR
    Graphical, from menu
    *Rigs of Rods - configurator
    *Rigs of Rods

If things do not work, please report what didn't work (installation or running or playing or what), also add this information:
    Code:
    sudo apt-get update
    grep DISTRIB_RELEASE /etc/lsb-release
    uname -m
    LANG=c apt-cache policy angelscript caelum libmygui libogre-1.8.0 ogre-paged rigsofrods socketw | grep Ins -B 1 -A 1 | grep ":"
    Example:
    Code:
    DISTRIB_RELEASE=12.04
    x86_64
    angelscript:
      Installed: 2.22.1-ubuntu2+precise
      Candidate: 2.22.1-ubuntu2+precise
    caelum:
      Installed: 0.6.1-ubuntu4+precise
      Candidate: 0.6.1-ubuntu4+precise
    libmygui:
      Installed: 3.2.0-ubuntu2+precise
      Candidate: 3.2.0-ubuntu2+precise
    libogre-1.8.0:
      Installed: 1.8.1-ubuntu1+precise
      Candidate: 1.8.1-ubuntu1+precise
    ogre-paged:
      Installed: 1.1.3-ubuntu2+precise
      Candidate: 1.1.3-ubuntu2+precise
    rigsofrods:
      Installed: 0.40.4-ubuntu3+precise
      Candidate: 0.40.4-ubuntu3+precise
    socketw:
      Installed: 031026-ubuntu1+precise
      Candidate: 031026-ubuntu1+precise
Start game from terminal, with command /opt/rigsofrods/bin/RoR &> log.txt and log will be written to the file, which is easy to attach.

    For developers:

Needed scripts and upstream tarballs are in git repository: https://gitorious.org/ror-ppa/ror-ppa

    Steps for managing own PPA:
    *Create launchpad-account: https://launchpad.net
*Assign ssh-key (for uploading) and gpg-key (for signing packages) to your account.
*Create a new PPA (I suggest to use same name for 'url' and 'display')

You need 'git' to download sources, 'dput' to upload and 'debuild' (from package devscripts) for building source packages. You don't need compiler/libraries, you are not compiling anything locally.

    Fetch everything needed with git:
    Code:
    git clone git@gitorious.org:ror-ppa/ror-ppa.git
    Then you have directory -structure:
    send_package_to_ppa_038.sh
    send_package_to_ppa_044.sh
    038/mygui/debian
    038/mygui/MyGUI_3.2.0.zip
    ...(for every package)
    038/angelscript/debian
    038/angelscript/angelscript_2.20.3.zip
    044/mygui/debian
    044/mygui/MyGUI_3.2.0.zip
    ...(for every package)
    044/angelscript/debian
    044/angelscript/angelscript_2.22.1.zip

(i.e. each package has unmodified zip or tar from upstream and one directory containing debianization)

'send_package_to_ppa*'-script is very generic helper for uploading sources to PPA. It can handle any source packages.
Change 'maintainer', use email corresponding to your gpg. Change 'address', it contains your launchpad login-name and ppa-name. (Optional: change list of supported ubuntu versions)

Then for desired ror-version subdirectory (038 or 044) run './upload_all.sh' which calls correct '../../send_package_to_ppa_* 1' where last number is minor_revision_number for this package. It must be greater than package already in your PPA. It will ask your gpg password one time and (as default) remembers it for a some time. I suggest
    Code:
    echo "DEBUILD_TGZ_CHECK=no" > ~/.devscripts
or it will ask y/n for each package.

As soon as packages hit to the server you will get notification email. If compiling success you will not get more mails (keep refreshing your PPA-page (there are estimate how many hours it takes)). If there are errors you will get email.

    Can you give more details:
    1) What happens when you start RoR from menu (e.g. from unity)?
    2) What happens when you start RoR with rorconfig -> "Save and play"
    3) What happens when you start RoR from terminal (type RoR and press enter)? This is best way to get textual log (copy-paste here).

Doest it start? Can you see RoR's loading screen? How about RoR's start menu?

    very nice, thanks

do you think we should add the debianization to our code repository?

We should also ship Ogre 1.8 and focus on the 0.4.0 release as its the next version to be released. 0.39 had a LOT of bugs in it that will be fixed in 0.4.

At least I'm hoping that some of the official developer gets this working and opens official PPA for RoR.

Ok, I think Ogre-1.8.0 is already debianized, so it could be easy task to get Ogre-1.8.1 working also (I think this 1.8.1 is needed). I will add it.

Ok, can you be more verbose and give some hints what means 'never worked'? Does it mean it is not even trying to start (this means there are typo in menu entry, or some dependency library is missing)? Or do you see loading screen? Do you see start menu (this could means some data file is missing from package)? Or does it crash during gameplay (this means actual bug in source code)? It really matters what you see. Do you want make screen recording and push it to youtube or do you prefer to describe it textual or maybe series of still images?

I am very excited for this as I am tired of playing RoR through wine.
    Here are my results:

    1) What happens when you start RoR from menu (e.g. from unity)?

I get the splash screen and the "Parsing Scripts..." loading bar, everything is properly displayed. But that's it; after that the system returns to my desktop.

    2) What happens when you start RoR with rorconfig -> "Save and play"

The Configurator works like a charm, but I click "Save and Play" and get the same result as above.

    3) What happens when you start RoR from terminal (type RoR and press enter)? This is best way to get textual log (copy-paste here).

I have attached 'screen.log' from when I attempted to run RoR from terminal.

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks!
    Code:
RoR: symbol lookup error: RoR: undefined symbol: _ZN5MyGUI13RenderManager12onResizeViewERKNS_5types5TSizeIiEE
I don't yet have ideas how to fix this, but this is my bet where to start solving it:
    Code:
    my-gui/MyGUIEngine/src/MyGUI_RenderManager.cpp:45:   void RenderManager::onResizeView(const IntSize& _viewSize)

I installed from PPA and it shows:
    Code:
    ldd /opt/rigsofrods/bin/RoR | grep boost
            libboost_thread.so.1.46.1 => /usr/lib/libboost_thread.so.1.46.1 (0x00007f868f8b4000)
This is on 64bit Ubuntu-12.04 and md5sum is
    Code:
    278fc2a77f64b83b977eed50d1226e86 /opt/rigsofrods/bin/RoR
I'm all the time pushing new versions of libraries (against newest libogre), but none of them should not depend/use libboost_thread.so.1.40.0.

I added general instructions on opening post what to report if RoR is not starting. They can also be used to check that everything is in uptodate.

Repositories supports now also Ubuntu versions 12.10 and 13.04. (I have problems to test them inside VirtualBox)

    Thanks for trying. Use terminal:
    Code:
    /opt/rigsofrods/bin/RoR &> log.txt
And you get all messages and errors to the file named log.txt, attach that.

I havn't had a problem running RoR with opengl in wine, other than that you need an indefinatly powerful system, mine wont do it on minimum settings, probably just my craphics card.

I'm hoping the ubuntu release will work out some cpu bandwidth taken up by the windows emulator.

Best of luck with this guys

Default Re: Announcement: PPA for Ubuntu-12.04

First of all, AapoRantalainen - THANK YOU for packaging this monster. I tried to compile it several times in the last year or so, and never make it to the end.

I tried RoR today on 12.04 64-bit. I have AMD 7950 card with Ubuntu's proprietary drivers. I also downloaded some 0.4 terrains (Jalkku's rallymap, N-Labs testing facility, Auriga proving grounds) and 0.37 pack. If I choose simple terrain, I can drive vehicles and everything is OK, except some grey plane on, I guess, one of axes:

If I try to load any terrain except simple, all I get is completly grey rendering:

I tried to turn off/down all things in settings, one by one, but it only gets worse:

Interestingly, on one of maps, Auriga, there are some textures rendered:

Any ideas what this might be?

    Best regards,

Note: Where are some maps i can try? Everything works great! Although it's quite boring being stuck on the default map :P
