Default Steampunk Monster Truck (The Brass Beast)

'Allo all. This is my first post on the ROR fourms, but i've been modelling guff and monsters for a while now, thought it'd be time to jump over to the ROR forums.

So far i've dumped about six hours into modelling it. still a ways to go. had an idea for a faux open air transfer case in the middle of the frame rail and dropping down into the cradle.

It's exactly the same size as a real life CRD frame, despite the fact that it looks absalutely bloody massive, and mabye half the details i want are actually there, and it still manages to clock in at 15k with quads.

it also really needs a body. i tried stuffing a '32 ford onto it, but that didn't really fit, and with the bullhorn cage poking out the front of the windshield line, it'd probably need a custom body anyway.

so yeah. jumpin' in i suppose

This thing looks awesome! Is it going to have a bunch of Exposed gears for the drive train as well? Because that would look absolutely insane!
Especially all whirling around as it drives! XD

yeah. i wanted to have a gear spinning at engine speed, a gear spinning at airspeed and a gear spinning at half of wheelspeed sitting behind the enginge in the framerails to make it look like a transmission, with a few more spinning in the yet to be sealed cradle/open segment under the cab, but i can't for the life of me figure out animation strings in the .truck file

I love steampunk and this is just my opinion but I think the cage should be made of I-beams and rivets.

Actually L-shaped stock would be even more authentic probably.

And you should give it traction engine wheels, either singles, duals, or a single double width version.

Theirs a monster truck n&b chassis that anyone can use and modify on the repo (I know this because I made it).

well when i think steampunk, i think insane brass grandeur with a heavy contrast of wrought iron and fading gold metal, riddled with rivets and steam manes, bolts and pipes poking out from every crevice. not so much historical victorian accuracy.

and i've already got it sitting on a nodebeam. currently it's on the abysmally handling SM nodebeam, but i've got a replacement coming from someone in the longrun

If that's the direction your artistic vision sends you in then that's what you should do.

Just wondering, will this have a realistic weight? Brass is very heavy stuff, the Henry Golden Boy (yes a gun) has a solid brass receiver, to make it reasonably light they have to use some plastic internal parts (still weighs about 5-8lbs, most .22 rifles weight about 2-4lbs).

Welcome to the forums! And I might add, this truck looks incredible so far. It just needs smooth shading and an edge split to look perfect!

mabye. still has to handle decently. can't have something that falls out of the sky every time you hit a ramp.

and yes, i know. i just work in un smoothed just to line up parts between seperate objects. should all be fine and dandy by the end of it

anyway, added the shocks and a few new bars. added the exaust pipes, tweaked a few leading lines to make it look less like a CRD, modeled somre more gears and fleshed out a few details on the engine

all the guages will be textured obviously.

going to start on the interior now, glad everyone's liking it

Oh, I get it. And the updates look great, also you could make the part of the shock that actually moves one mesh so that you place one mesh on the shock N/B instead of two.

And another thing, my brother and I both think that you should, if possible, make the gauges out of nixie tubes.

well yes, the brace for the shock is a seperate model from the shock and will be part of the frame model, whereas the shock has a little crossbolt that fits into a "slide" on the brace

as for the tubes, i would if i could, but i'm not even sure if you can do scripted texture changes like that. if someone could prove me wrong, that'd be brilliant, as i'm material retarded.

make sure all your normals are facing outwards or else you will have many backfaces.

Okay, good to know that you are already doing it like that.

And as for the technology behind a digital gauge, I have no idea how that would work.
