    Quick question...

What version of this map do you recommend for people running 0.37-1 on a Mac?

It's actually very simple. Boot Linux from a CD or a USB stick, mount the Windows partition and copy the files from the HDD to another USB stick. I'm not sure if this works without installing Linux, but i think it's worth trying.

Edit: I decided to try it, and after a bit of unnecessary fiddling i found a quick and easy way to do it. I can try to guide you through the process of recovering the files if you're interested and still have the crashed HDD lying around.

Yes you can, you can (and i have) run the Linux operating system (Linux mint) of a cd as long as you can get into the BIOS to tell it to boot from cd instead of an hard drive, then you can access/ attempt to recover your files and copy them on to some other media device.

Good luck getting your files back, hope you are successful

Linux mint will be very easy for you to use and getting it to run of a cd is lemon squeeze

You're confusing 2 totally different things there mate. Turning a computer on and all pre-boot stuff is handled by the BIOS. The OS takes care of booting and everything else from that point on. The fact that his HDD crashed doesn't mean his computer can't start. It simply can't load the OS, meaning the important base functions are still fine. Now, tell me what would prevent him from using his dad's or mum's, or friend's computer to download a Linux Live CD onto his USB stick, and then sticking that into his own computer and booting it? Nothing. It's easy as 1-2-3. If the BIOS is broken, then there is a problem. And even that can probably be fixed.

In short: Your argument is invalid. It can be done. And it's easy.

With a portable Linux installation it would have taken less than 10 minutes to gain access to the files on the HDD (Assuming everything else apart from system files is ok). It's your choice, but you're doing it the hard way. If you want to make things unnecessarily complicated (and possibly expensive), then go ahead.

The hard drive is getting replaced by Dell, because of the warrenty, the replacement is free

That's not the point. Are you seriously willing to abandon such a great project just because you don't want to get off your lazy ass and do an easy operation that could save most, or maybe even all of the files?

That's all, i don't want to turn this into a flamewar. I'm here if you want to give it a go, but if you don't, fine, it's not my problem.

Its probably best to try and get any files of the hdd before giving it to dell and getting it fixed for 2 reasons:

    1. You get your files back, or at least some hopefully
    2. If you have any private info on there im sure dell will have a field day

Not getting past windows loading could be a virus anyway as opposed to a broken hdd. If that is the case just use the windows boot disk that came with your pc and reformat the hdd and reinstall windows, after that everything should be back to like having a new pc.

Your choice anyway, im just trying to inform you of the other choices you have. Hope you get your pc fixed soon

Try booting in safe mode with networking. If it works, you need to run Melwarebytes.com. Download it from another computer and install with safe mode. Run the program 2 times. Thats the same thing that was happening to me about 3-4 weeks ago.

A few weeks ago my hard drive fail to boot my OS cause a virus deleted some important file and it refused to me to login to the machine and even in safe mode it suffered the same faith. It wouldn't let me install XP. Cause I have 2 hdd's I installed the it on the 320 gigabyte HDD which was used as a storage HDD. I got NIS 2009 and AVG then I connected the infected HDD and got the virus under control. It was a trojan horse. Only bad thing is that the sound driver can't be installed.
