Must be something else behind the crash, hard to believe that drop would of killed him but you never know.

Rest in peace Tony you will be missed!Attachment 0

Right I have a problem with this accident! This is the 4th accident involving a Stobart Scania that 'mysteriously' lost control and crashed! A close friend of mine was seriously injured in 2008 on the M6 when his steering column became loose as he was driving causing him to lose control! Then in 2009 a drive leaving the M6 at Lymm suffered the same 'malfunction' leading to him coliding with a lamp post ( he was unhurt) then in 2010 a drive on M4 was driving into the M&S services (one with tight 180 degree bend) when his column came loose and he turned over after hitting barrier! He also was seriously injured! Management told us these were all down to 'driver error' as the drivers had released the column themselves! I have yet to hear this said about Tony but I doubt it will be long, they and scania are facing a very sizeable legal action from 2 of the drivers! I think enough is enough! Stop hiding and tell the truth about the flaw with the column locks! They are the only manufacturer who uses air to keep the lock on meaning if you suddenly dump the Air the column moves! That is not safe!!

Let me see if I understand. The steering column is air-actuated in that it is allowed to tilt and telescope by means of a lock that is operated by air. When the truck drains of air, the column with be free to tilt and telescope.

But if the air is drained, the brakes should already be applied. The spring emergency/parking brakes will engage at or just above 30 PSI, but the column shouldn't need much PSI to remain in a locked position, maybe 10 PSI at most.

There is also the low air warning light/alarm that comes on at 60 PSI.

So in order for what you are saying to be true, Scaniaman, many more safety systems failed here than just the steering column.

Personally, I am of the opinion that the drivers you quoted as saying "the steering column just came loose" are lying, and that they hit the tilt/telescope themselves. I've passed many drivers with their legs in stupid positions, resing on or against the dash, etc. As for the driver in the news story, it is hard to say.
    Be more specific, please.

I doubt this driver had his feet up thoe. I think it was wind that caused it. it was a very open area with no protection from wind. I cant understand is how the truck came to rest. the wheels where pointing away from the bridge rot towards it. that means it has to have done a 270o Barrel roll in the air. Unless he had taken a righthander to hard & flipped it before it went throught the barrier then rolled 180o as it came off the top of the bridge.

Still a very unusual & sad accident

Thats hard to say. A loaded trailer will be less affected by wind than an empty one. In the winter time during snow storms, if our curtain-side trailers are empty they will dog-walk out a few feet, but the tarpaulin sides act like parachutes, catching the wind. I've never seen a solid-sided van trailer dog-walk more than maybe a foot out from the tractor.

Without knowing the roadway or the exact conditions it is hard to know what happened.
    Be more specific, please.

I was on the M56 today. saw where the Scania had landed. My Dad recons that because of its unusual landing position (Roof facing the bridge) Tony landed the truck on it's left side but over hanging the bridge so the weight from the overhang made it fall off the bridge & do a 180O roll as it fell causing it to land on its right side. Tony basically sufferd from 2 crashes seconds apart :'(
