IMO I think there are way too many polies in that model. 15k Tris considering only the external faces. For example the MZ2 is 30k Polies, and includes both sides on panels, interiors and chassis.

I doubt he will be able to stay lowpoly once he will do the other sides of the panels and the interiors.

Having more polies doesn't means it will crash better, unless you have a highly detailed Structure, it would probably be FPS Eating if used as Flexbody (i think that's what happens with Masa's Pajero). Tough the he model is pretty nice.

You need to understand. With the wheels and tires my Windstar is roughly 26k Tris. Take them out and it will be at 18k Tris; remember, that is with no undercarriage and interior. Also, this is a minivan and look at its body shape. Most of Gabester's cars I see require less polygon usage than a minivan, which has 3 rows of seats and a large interior. This is not a fact I am saying, I am just making a hypothesis out of what I am seeing.

I do understand. You modelled only 1 side of the panels? If you will ever make the other side too, the polycount will double. That's what i'm trying to say. I'm not a promodeller, so i may be also wrong, but i think that a game won't require so many polies.

The backside of the panels will not even be half the outer surface's polycount. And another thing, nothing here is lowpoly

Here's where I'm at with a flexbody mesh that I made years ago. 1964 IH pickup. I'm still trying to figure out textures though...
