Post Objective of the ROR and the Forums

For RoR to take off in any major way you either need content or you need the project to be taken over by a gaming company.

I will note that my PM to this member was:

    _________________________________________________
    Subject: Welcome!
Body: You'll want to read the guidelines a little more carefully, especially the section on "Manually Added Signatures" Smiley
    _________________________________________________

I will note that we have implemented a system that links to the guidelines, along with outlining a few of the most important bits, that appears when you go to post.

I will also note that a friendly PM is sent to nearly everyone who breaks a guidelines. Nasty PMs are saved for repeat offenders. It is expected that not everyone will find the guidelines, but we make constant improvements, I'd think.

If you're that overly-sensitive, I'd suggest that I would personally not want to work with you on any level anyway, although the choice would not be mine to make.

oh, that happened to aurans, sad to hear. Loved Trainz.
Also such area exists for friendly modding and coorporation. We call it the 'invited members'. Those members are chose among those who contributed great things and are know to have an existing brain and such.
The entrance to this section must be earned by anyone, so if you want to join this small elite modders, then you would have to work up the ladder, as everyone else did here.

And good to read a post that is more intelligent then most of the normal kiddy posts here around (like i want i police version with lightbar!!!1)

I have to kind of say that there is no way the repository could handle that many items, and it's already a pain to navigate the way it is.

However, invisible forums is a horrible idea for the most part, nothing **** me off more than having to sign up to see content, especially if the forum is programmed to allow spiders to see the content. You're fighting for numbers of registered users, not to provide a resource, and you turn a lot of people away like that.

It's pretty bad webmastering if you ask me. It's why technical staff hate listening to advertisement or management...

Though I too see that the tensions on this forum seem to run high, I generally stay away from it. I'm here to play RoR and see whats going on in it's development for the most part. I feel some of this seems to due to weird forum structure thats there just to have an interesting feature, much like the repository is all AJAX just because, when really it just slows the entire function of it down.

thanks for constructive criticisms, good to get some
the repository source code is not open-source but if anyone is interested i am more than willing to distribute it in order that someone will improve it.
When its current form was written, no one expected that much downloads. For that reason it is slow :-\
Some last versions ago caching got used, so its a lot faster now. If you have any ideas how to improve the general situation, then just tell us

Also we are not driving members to register with us, i think thats a pretty bad example of how to manage a forum. If anyone wants a non-ajax version of the repository, i could make one.
Most part that happens in the invisible forum is beta-testing of things that gets then released to the public later.

This is different. We're referring to a private area of the forum, where only a very vew members have access. Sort of a private club, as it were; and you're invited if someone nominates you and others agree...

we have a nomination area for people to post who they wish to nominate? or is that one of thoes mod/admin areas?

    anyways...

Most of the time people (about 99.99%[approximate]) here are really helpful, if some one has a question they just need to post it (in the proper topic/section/area) and usually someone will answer if they know.

as for modders and contributers we have quite a few and more trying to learn every day!

to list a few (thiers alot more then I will be listing because we would be here all day trying to list every last person)

but in the way of contributers for the most part we have:

Bonehead, Qer, Turbocharger, Isaac, me (James), Box5Diesel, Dieselfuelonly, adam on the internet, Thomas, Seggons, ROZ, ZTS, Nik041, and many many more

and thoes are just a few names of the the major people (that I can think of right off the top of my head) that contribute, wether its a little or alot we have quite a few who are contributeing all types of things!

The great thing about the forums is that if your a first timer like me (makeing my first truck for RoR [altho its been in the works since RoR 29/30]) or a person who can crank a truck out with in a couple days (respectivly) like TurboCharger, Box5, ect if you have a question about anything thiers always someone here who can help you out!

So really the forums are more "relaxed" and open that they may seem, granted thiers rules but every forum, site, place has rules of some kind...

and IMHO this is one of the most helpful communitys ive ever been a part of...

I may not agree with all the rules, but I accept them and try to ignore some part. IMHO it is not neccesary to point it out every time someone breaks the rules/guidelines. I do admit that I sometimes think the forum is "unfriendly", and I can imagine it can be intimidating to new members.

(Edit: this is the 4th time I started typing this, and I'm still not sure if this is the correct way to say what I wanted to say.)

Thought the OP was referring to something else, by making major content an incentive to join up. Maybe I was wrong though.

I don't know if it's the nature of AJAX or just server strain, but having to click->click->click->click because the AJAX is in a half-process loading something I don't really want to load is kind of a pain (ex: I wanna see light trucks, I click on trucks, it loads trucks, I cannot access light trucks until it is loaded typically, and due to menu structure it's hard to get to with fewer clicks).

Yes. The OP was referring to making major content an inventive to join.

OP was responding to Thomas's mention of the Invited group.

I was clarifying to OP what Thomas meant.

So yes. What OP thought was different from what I said, and that was the point.

Perhaps a group of people say Thomas and some others (or who ever is willing to try and help) could sit down and brain storm some ideas out and try to impliment a new system....I do agree a bit the AJAX tends to slow down a tad here and thier when under load or any stress and when digging for a specific file its kinda annoying to dig through so much just to find something...
