What diesel engine do you like? Cummins VS Cat VS Detroit.

considering it's been just about 2 years since I last posted in this thread....

My preference still lies with Caterpillar, although I have not been impressed with the EPA engines.

Since CAT has pulled out of the truck engine game, I've taken Cummins on as a favourite for their simplicity when compaired to Detroit Diesel.

We have one 2009 volvo in our fleet that has had more problems in 1 year than our 03 peterbilt has had in 7 years.

I just love the engine on old Roman Diesels ;D For those who don't know, it was the national truck of the Romanias communist times : Today, they are used for the toughest jobs and they are still working (some from '65-'70)

EMD 645:

Listen to that two-stroke power! On a cold day this beast might need 20+ seconds of solid cranking.

The 645 indicates 645 cubic inches of displacement... per cylinder. The SD40-2 in the vid has 16.

EMD's are my favorite, then 2 stroke detroits, I like old diesels, but im more of a nerd, so the 60 series and up I love to work on. everyone i know hates ECUs but i love them because i know what goes wrong, and changing out a wiring harness if FUN, no sarcasm, I think its really fun.

Duramax are no good diesels they should of never been produced...
Everyone I know that has a Duramax has had nothing but problem...
Like going down the road and it dieing and acting like its outa fuel but has a full tank...

Powerstroke I love a powerstroke too....My uncle (the one in my sig) had a 93' FORD E-250 box truck with a 7.3 powerstroke and dam if we put it to the test it had some power and was loud and loved it too..had a few problem at the times...But now its just sitting with no one to fix it...It just wont start...My uncle was going to get it fixed since he could not figure it out(he was a mechanic at first then moved to electrical) but them he left...

Duramax is the best for smaller trucks, have one on my 04 silverado with an Allison transmission. Never had a problem with it, no repairs needed. Just put diesel and oil in it and run it forever.
That is my opinion, so I don't want to hear crap about this.

I'm not saying that the above mentioned diesels are boring (I love the sound of a screaming Detroit diesel) but to spice things up a bit: a link to a Russian manufacturer that makes tank engines: Chelyabinsk Tractor Plant. Pretty impressive stuff, 38L(that's over 2300 cubic inch) V12 engines that have up-to 1000 hp in a package smaller than a Detroit Diesel 8V92.

Unfortunately there are no videos on Youtube for the engines itself. But there are videos about the T72 and the T90 tanks that use them.
