Post What diesel engine do you like? Cummins VS Cat VS Detroit.

Personally I like Cummins all the way in semis. The big cam 3 cummins was a good engine. The detroit 60 series is a million mile motor. The 3406 Cat was a pretty good engine too. So heres in order from 1-3 what i like best.

    1: Cummins

    2: Detroit

    3: Cat

Do you guys know what the Detroit two cycle engines were or sounded like? Well now you know.

Depends on what truck the motor is in...

I wouldn't trade my Cummins for anything in my Dodge.

Well my dad has a 1984 western star log truck that has a Big cam 3 cummins in it. The big cam 3 motors were popluar. Just about every truck i rode in had big cam 3 cummins in them. The others is rode in had like a C12 Cat in a 1995 Freightliner COE and a 1979 Freightliner COe with an 8v92 in it, also a 1992 International dump truck that had a 3406 Motor in it.

This is like comparing apples, oranges and pears.

They all do the same thing, everyone just has their preferences.

Personally, my dad has had alot of good luck with Caterpiller. He had a 3406 in his Freightliner Classic, and currently has a C-15 475 in his Peterbilt 379. Prior to that, he had a Ford LTL9000 that was either Cat or Cummins, I don't remember.

    So....

    1. Cat

    2. Cummins/Detroit Diesel (I feel equally about these, I have heard good, and bad about both)

    3. Power Stroke

    4. Volkswagon TDI series

    5. Duramax

yeah, I know those werent in the whole topic, but I thought I'd throw em in anyways.

    1. Cummins

    2. Cat/Detroit

    3. Duramax

I don't think I'd like CAT or detroit in a truck, from what my dad says they take forever for the RPMs to drop off to shift, he used to used the jake to shift one of his fedex trucks with a c12. The detroit series 60s are pretty good engines, they last forever but drive like the cats. I'll take a Cummins N14 any day over a cat/detroit.

honestly, i'd never want a volvo truck in my life. One the highway, the slowest trucks coming uphill are always volvo, the CATs, Cummins and others come ripping by but the volvos just creep.

See, I don't agree with that. Did you ever think maybe the Volvo is loaded?

    Maybe it's an unexperianced driver.

Or maybe they just don't care how fast they get up the hill.

My dad had a buddy with a flattop volvo. They were going through new york with 80,000 pounds gross repectivly. They passed a Pete with a big-cam Cummins (which was LTLing).

    My dad loves this story:

Pete: Is that a Freightliner coming up beside me?

Father: Yep. With 50,000 pounds of steel on the deck, no less!

Pete: Holy Jeez! I need to pick up the pace!

Father: Yeah? Wait til you see the Volvo comeing up behind me.

    Pete:

europeen trucks are build to be strong not fast. atleast here they are built to drive 60 ton (wich is 132,000 pounds) so i promise you, any volvo here are alot stronger than any U.S truck ever =) actually there is an pete or something like that, a cabover thingy i drives past almost everyday here in sweden. even if i are loaded. so that you say can we discuss. and i think jeepster have right in his thoughts.

    Thanks Donko.

As far as I know (and I don't know much, so bear with me) American engines don't differ much from Euro engines. In Michigan and Canada, lots of trucks weigh over 100,000 lbs and up to 150,000 lbs.

The strongest engine I know off-hand from a production line is the 650hp King of The Hill C-15 (formerly the C-16) ACERT Caterpiller engine.

Soooo.... yeah. guys, dont argue about this. Apples and Oranges. each truck is manufactured for it's own enviroment and works well in it's own enviroment.

Put a peterbilt in Europe, and you've got problems.

Puts a DAF in North America, you've got some more problems.

Sounds awesome and I'm sure whatever gets it will pull wheelies!

yes and yes and yes and then no =)

a daf in us should do it but not vice versa. and the engines differ alot. they work as same principle but here (europe) they want an very strong rpm curve, like the volvo D16 (660hp and 3200nm) almost have 3000nm from 800rpm and above. i dont think the biggest CAT have that BUT i think they have almost that much nm to but higher up like its strongest at 1100rpm or above =) and the thing is the D16 have it all above from 800rpm up to about 1300-1400rpm. but above that its going weaker fast =) therefore the europens trucks seems weaker but in a big uphill they rip all cats, cummins or detroits

but anyway. its all same shit =)

    Lol exactly man.

You guys need your trucks to pull up hill. The biggest grades we pull are either the rockys (nevada, calfiornia, etc) or New York, and the little foot hills all around. But for the most part our trucks keep smooth on big open highways!
